Beginners Yoga – Tips from the Divine Flow Team
Start the year off right with yoga
The beginning of a new year is a time to reflect on the year that’s been, set new goals for the year ahead, and focus on your health and wellbeing. There’s never been a better time to book your first yoga class.
We understand that it can be a little nerve-racking if you’ve never tried yoga before, or maybe you’re just out of practise. We’re here to do everything we can to make you feel comfortable and enjoy your new yoga journey.
Advice from those who have been there before
As we welcome our new beginner students to Divine Flow for our 5 week beginners yoga course, we asked our Divine Flow team to share the advice they’d give themselves if they started yoga all over again.
To practice consistently.
If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t, so ask your teacher for help and or tweak the shape to fit your body.
Listen to alignment cues, it serves you in the long run. Ask your teacher questions and if you find yourself struggling to slow your mind down or breathe consistently while you practice; keep going, it only gets better.
Listen to your body, it’s your greatest guide. You are not in competition with anyone. This is your time to process, digest & heal.
Don’t compare yourself to anyone around, you are on your own journey…
It doesn’t matter how deep your body moves in the pose, it is about how present you can be in that moment. Asana is just one of the 8 limbs of yoga, what your yoga pose looks like is not the goal of yoga. The goal of yoga is to bring your attention to a single point of focus, reducing the fluctuations of the mind.
Explore many different teachers and many different styles. There may be a style of teaching out there that is perfect for you. Play around; don’t get stuck, look for new experiences. Try classes that are not just focused on the physical practice of Yoga but instead explore Pranayama (the breath) or meditation.
